Software simulation case study

Software localisation for a global computer-aided engineering organisation

Capita Translation and interpreting (Capita TI) have recently worked with a multinational computer software company on a project to localise their software interface and documentation.

Our client specialises in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) engineering simulation, with a unique vision in multidisciplinary design exploration (MDX). Their simulation software covers a wide range of engineering disciplines, including computational solid mechanics (CSM), particle dynamics, electrochemistry, acoustics and rheology.

Their software is used worldwide by manufacturing firms in the automotive, aerospace, energy and marine sectors.

The challenge

With a global presence across 40 worldwide locations, our client understands the importance of ensuring that their software and supporting documentation is available in a number of languages. Their flagship software product is designed to fit easily within existing engineering processes, automate simulation workflows and perform iterative design studies with minimal user interaction.

In order to roll out their software to new markets, our client required a long-term localisation partner to deliver highly specialised multilingual technical documentation, in line with software release cycles. Having previously relied on in-house translators, the scale of the project deadline demands led to the decision to centralise to a professional language service provider.

Our client met ITR, who were acquired by Capita TI in 2016, at the ISTC UK conference in 2012, and since then, have continued to work closely with us, developing our partnership.

How Capita TI helped

We integrated our linguists and translation technology with the requirements and expectations of our client into one successful project. We ensure that only qualified, experienced and specialist linguists with demonstrable experience in the computer-aided engineering software sector are used on our projects, in order to guarantee technically accurate, high-quality translations.

After the initial launch into the Japanese market in 2012, our client expanded in 2014 into the Chinese market and we now provide localisation in both languages for all software updates, training and technical documentation for the client’s flagship product.

The result

Working in partnership with a professional language service provider allowed our client to meet tight deadlines and software release dates, as our experience in handling complex subject matter and large volumes of content within fixed tight deadlines ensured that their multilingual content was released on time to their global markets.

To meet expectations, we deployed a customised workflow solution, coupled with strict compliance checks, to manage Java properties files via GitHub and DITA XML with non-standard tag settings.

We also worked closely with our clients overseas in the Japanese and Chinese offices to meet their goals in terms of style and terminology.

By integrating linguists and translation technology, turnaround times were faster, costs were controlled and the overall results of the project were of the highest possible quality.

What the client said:

“One of the great strengths that you provide is the personal contact. We always feel like we are your only customer!”
